Dwindling aid for charity homes persistJan 15, 2023 :- Many empty seats were spotted at the annual Chinese New Year event organised by Rumah Victory in Puchong tonight, a sad sign of the dwindling support to charity homes. My wife and I have attended this annual event for more than five years pre pandemic period. All the past events were packed with people lining up to support the event , giving away Ang pows to close to 100 old folks and orphans of the home. But tonight we saw a marked difference. The event was over in less than 2 hours due to the small crowd of supporters . We can still recall the times when the old folks and orphans used to pile up the Ang pows they received from well wishers. But this year, all they have was just a handful from some donors who are still able to afford the thoughtfulness. From this event, it is abundantly clear that charity homes are facing an uphill task in raising funds. It is during such tough times that Caring Soul, a charity outfit which my wife and I founded 13 years ago, will not only continue with our help to the homes but to put in more effort to earnestly assist them in whatever way we can. With the help of a few Caring Soul members, we distributed angpows to some 100 old folks and orphans at the event held at the Rumah Victory Elderly Home in Puchong this evening of January 15,2023. We hope our report on the plight of the needy and the dwindling aid they are getting, will help to raise some awareness among friends and the public. View More |
A night of fun and joy for 100 old folks and orphansJanuary 8, 2023 : In the course of our charity and voluntary work the past 13 years, we came across many kind hearted souls from a wide section of the populace. But it is not often that we meet the same person dedicated to the mission of helping others in a consistent manner. And that is understandably so because not everyone has the time and financial resources to do so. Hence, it was admirable to see a kind hearted woman who consistently chose to celebrate her birthday in an old folks home, taking the opportunity to bring joy and happiness to the residents. Going by the name of Kitty Ang, she would use her birthday wish to get sponsors, muster her friends to dress up in various costumes and set up a singing and dance stage to entertain old folks and orphans from various homes. Last night ( January 7, 2023 ) was one of her yearly routine. Twelve Caring Soul members volunteered to take part in the event, offering help to close to 100 old folks and orphans from five different homes who gathered at the Rahmat Old Folks home in Semenyih to enjoy the pre Chinese new year celebration brought to them by this kind hearted Kitty. The old folks and orphans were also feasted with a buffet line of food while being entertained by some local singers. A lion dance performance was later followed by the old folks joining in the fun of dancing to the songs and music that played through the night until 10 pm. Caring Soul volunteers helped with the setting up and caring for the old folks during the event. Kitty reminds us of the founding member of an orphanage in Petaling Jaya whose yearly birthday wish was also to take her orphans for an outing to celebrate the occasion. We salute such kind hearted souls. The least Caring Soul could do was to lend them the necessary support with our volunteers. Not only did the old folks and orphans left last night’s event with gifts and ang pows sponsored by Kitty but also happy memories of the night. View More |
New Year message 2023Jan 1, 2023 : - As we welcome the dawn of a new year, we cannot help but start looking back at the events of the past year. Two significant ones were the lifting of the movement control order ( MCO ) and the emergence of a new government following the country’s general election. Some of us, reeling from two years of lock down due to the pandemic, came out of the MCO with a vengeance for travel. Yet, there are others who are still licking their wounds inflicted by two years of economic slowdown. Most hard hit were the less fortunates residing in various charity homes. Their reliance on the generosity of the public came to an abrupt stop when both cash contributions and material donations diminished to critical levels. As 2023 begins, we are still unclear where we are heading. We seem to be achieving some semblance of normalcy yet deep inside us, we know things will never be the same as before. Caring Soul, a charity outfit which my wife and I started, is 13 years old this year. We started the new year with visits to two old folks home in Semenyih and a handicapped home in Cheras. My wife and I went on a shopping spree the past few days to buy various grocery items for the three homes. This time round, we have to make purchases at various places to include Chinese new year items for the homes. After accumulating the necessities, we made deliveries to the homes on the morning of Jan 1, 2023. Special thanks go to Datuk Ho Kay Tat, the Group MD of the Edge Communication, for sponsoring the grocery items to the three homes. The balance of unsold hair shampoos that were donated by an old time friend, Eric and his wife Ann, for our recent charity bazaar were later distributed to the residents of the homes. A total cash donation of RM 1,500 was also made to the three homes on behalf of two friends, Charles Chee and Aaron Shori, who entrusted us with the assignment. It took us half a day to complete our mission. Caring Soul will make an attempt to increase its activities to help the less fortunate this year. This is because we continue to see charity homes seeking for help more explicitly than before. We continue to pray and hope that kind hearted friends will take some moments to remember them from time to time. We hope to help them get out of this difficult times, not with indulgence but with proper care and love. Lastly, as we put 2022 behind us and look forward to a fresh 2023, let us remember what Mark Twain said :- “ I cherish the dreams of yesterday and dare not dwell on the err’s of my past whose fate has been long decided, and effect I cannot change. For the dreams of yesterday are the challenges of today, and the hope for tomorrow” With that, my wife and I wish everyone a great year ahead, filled with joy, happiness and above all abundance of great health. Happy New Year ! View More |
Caring Soul members help out at charity bazaarOctober 23, 2022 :- Close to 20 Caring Soul members sacrificed a weekend with their families today to help out in a charity bazaar to raise funds for the expansion of an old folks home in Puchong, Kuala Lumpur. Two months before the event, the organise Rumah Victory approached Caring Soul to participate in the charity bazaar. Thanks to the sponsorship of friends, we were able to line up 20 stalls to sell goods ranging from children's clothings, costume jewelleries, hand woven bags, masks, tissues and personal care items to homemade cookies, popiah and buns. When the bazaar ended at 3 pm, Caring Soul managed to raise RM 14,825 from selling the items. It was comforting to see eager Caring Soul volunteers turning up as early as 7 am to set up the stalls and then selling the various items to the thousands of customers who thronged the bazaar until 2 pm. Many thanks go to the sponsors, in particular a four decade long friend Eric Chan and his wife Ann who generously donated almost 600 bottles of hair and body care products from their factory Intramiles Sdn Bhd for this cause. On top of raising RM 14,825 from the sale of the items at the charity bazaar, special thanks also go to friends who generously donated to Rumah Victory via Caring Soul after receiving my messages. Then there are many other friends who turned up at the charity bazaar itself and bought various amounts of coupons in support of the old folks home. My wife and I are truly blessed to have such supportive and kind hearted friends. All in all, it was a memorable day for Caring Soul and its volunteers. In spite of our tiredness, all of us left the charity bazaar venue with a hidden smile in our hearts, knowing that our little act of contribution will surely make some positive difference to someone else's lives. A display of true compassion - some caring momentsCaptured here are shots of some caring moments displayed by Caring Soul volunteers in some of their activities. Many residents of charity homes are unable to take care of themselves properly. The photos showed some Caring Soul members rolling up their sleeves to help the residents, from cutting their toe nails, applying medication to their backs and eyes as well as trimming their protruding nostrils' hair. Then there are numerous occasions when Caring Soul members help to feed them or just simply lend a listening ear to them. View More |
Mooncakes for old folksWith the mid autumn festival just round the corner, Caring Soul distributed mini mooncakes to 50 residents at two old folks homes in Semenyih today. The gesture is Caring Soul’s way of reminding the less fortunate that they are not forgotten during festive occasions. The visit to the two old folks home - Joy Garden and Rahmat Elderly Care centre - also coincided with Caring Soul's regular contribution of grocery items to them. This time round, the groceries were under the kind sponsorship of the Group MD of The Edge Publication Datuk Ho Kay Tat and the MD of Niagasari Construction Dato Chan Chee Hong. The visit ended with some cash donation to Joy Garden. View More |
Bringing cheers to 42 handicapped childrenAll it took were some fried chicken and six kind hearted volunteers to bring smiles and cheers to 42 children at a handicapped home in Cheras on the afternoon of 9/7/2022. Caring Soul executed its first activity-related event after lying low during the pandemic period. From our past activities of offering free hair cut and cooking for the residents of some charity homes, we have resorted to just delivering essentials and groceries to them the past two years. A few weeks ago, a handicapped home caretaker told us that it had been ages since the kids were given a Kentucky Fried Chicken treat. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Datuk Ho Kay Tat, the Group CEO of The Edge, we were able to fulfill the wish of the children with seven barrels of Kentucky Fried Chicken this afternoon. Six members of Caring Soul joined in the effort to distribute the chicken to the children of Persatuan Insan Istimewa Cheras. Some of the children required feeding and Caring Soul members were quick to lend a helping hand after shredding the chicken meat to smaller pieces for easier feeding. It was also to ensure that the meat was free from bones to prevent the children from choking. Meanwhile, two Caring Soul members also took the opportunity to distribute ang pows to the children. All of us took a Covid 19 saliva test, wore mask and sanitized ourselves before taking on the task with the children. In trying times when charity homes are struggling to bring food to the table with dwindling donations, we are mindful about utilising funds to help the homes with essentials rather than a KFC treat. Until our Caring Soul tagline “Coloring Lives” reminded us to find a balance between the will to live and the way to live. With that in mind, we decided to embark onto this mission of adding a little spice to this group of under privileged children while always bearing in mind that the scale of balance should be skewed towards helping the homes with the more basic essentials. Our tagline of colouring lives is not only meant for the under privileged but also for our members who volunteer their time to do their bit for a better society. There are already scores of well known charity organisations that are flushed with funds. Religious groups, companies welfare foundations and famous NGOs are but a few which are already contributing mammoth effort to alleviate the woes of the needy. Mindful that we are no where compared to these organisations ( and we have no intention to ), Caring Soul was founded on the principle of offering a platform to those who lack the financial resources but filled with compassion to want to contribute to the needy. Because fund raising is always a sensitive issue, Caring Soul steered clear of this area. With some reserved funds from the founders' retirement money, they funded all the events themselves because ultimately some form of financial donations to the homes are needed to open doors to achieve the goal of providing a platform for Caring Soul's volunteers to contribute their time. The founding couple recalled the early days when they naively knocked on doors of charity homes to offer free hair cuts only to be met with suspicious looks. Hence, most activity related events by our volunteers at selected homes ended with some cash donation from the founders personally. Of late, some close friends who are aware of Caring Soul's activities have entrusted the founders to help them donate some cash to these homes as well. With that, the founders are able to stretch the dollars on more occasions to carry out events ( mostly spending time with the residents ) at the homes. Over the last 12 years, we are pleased to say that Caring Soul had succeeded in having more than 50 volunteers who are willing to contribute their time to charity related events. However, we are far from reaching our ultimate goal of inculcating the culture of helping the needy to the younger generation. It was our goal to conduct education trips to children to charity homes with the dual objective of inculcating a sense of gratitude in them as well as hoping that they will do likewise when they grow up. The ultimate aim is to encourage more people to make the world a better place to live in. As it is, most residents of homes have already missed two years of companionship when the pandemic hit. It is worrisome to see the behaviour of children and even old folks change after two years of confinement inside the homes. In some of our visits when the MCO was temporarily lifted, we can only watched them at a distance, separated by the entrance gate. Some familiar faces waved from afar and we could sensed their desire to communicate but were unable to. Yes, the pandemic has indeed far reaching consequences than we can imagine. We harbour hope that some psychological experts will volunteer some therapy sessions for children affected by the two years of isolation from the outside world. Therein, lies this hidden problem that may only surface years later, if left unattended. Lastly, we are quick to acknowledge that Caring Soul is a far cry from other charity and voluntary organisations but we we will do what we can. On that same note we will continue to urge all our friends to do whatever they can for the needy. We are sure their touch in whatever manner is going to add some sparkle to their lives. View More |
Charity homes now opened to visitorsAfter being isolated for more than two years, two old folks home which Caring Soul visited regularly are now opened to visitors. But donations continued to be scarce as we inspected their kitchens for daily essentials during a visit to Joy Garden and Rahmat Old Folks home located in Semenyih this morning. Speaking to some of them revealed that donations have taken a hard beating. Gone were the days when they were heaped with lunch boxes and countless groceries. Today, they have to cook for themselves most of the time with some occasional lunch boxes coming in. With provisions running low, Joy Garden and Rahmat Old Folks home appealed to us for food about two weeks ago. Thanks to the kind contribution of the Managing Director of a construction firm Dato Chan Chee Hong, Caring Soul volunteers spent almost two hours this morning at TMG Mart to shop for necessities for the homes on his behalf. Joy Garden, with 40 inmates was extremely grateful for the load of groceries. While waiting for our assistance, they have to resort to transferring items from their Puchong Branch, something which they never have to do in the past. Our little publicity in the past via WhatsApp messages to trigger the kind thoughts of friends to help the less fortunate is also working. A kind neighbour must have told their son, who just arrived from the States to visit them, about our past messages. Their son was quick to text me to donate RM 500 to the two homes, which we did on his behalf during the visit this morning. Our heartfelt thanks to them for their generosity, not forgetting all those who have taken some form of initiative to help the needy in their own way. As long as our message has gone through , it doesn’t matter how and where the help goes to. After all the objective is NOT just to help the homes that we selected BUT to anyone that needs help in such tiring times. Meanwhile, 14 members of our 12-year-old charity outfit Caring Soul, finally had a gathering after being locked down by the pandemic for more than two years. At the gathering, the volunteers have expressed desire to come out again to resume their voluntary work of providing hair cuts for the old folks. With that, Caring Soul will begin organising charity hair cuts, albeit in a smaller and different way to ensure minimum risk to both the volunteers and the old folks. Brother Lau, who runs Rahmat Old Folks home with 14 inmates as of today, is undergoing a surgery for hernia on June 21. Let’s pray for his quick recovery. View More |
Caring Soul's initiative continuesCaring Soul today on 26th March 2022 resumes its initiative to help the less fortunate with a visit to Joy Garden and Rahmat old folks home in Semenyih. The founders delivered some groceries to these two homes as well as made out cash donations to them on behalf of some friends who have entrusted them with this mission. Several days earlier on March 21, a visit was also made to Persatuan Insan Istimewa Cheras . Some cash donation was made to help them with their handicapped home of 42 children. Caring Soul had been helping this home for more than 10 years now and was pleased to see its progress. The fact that the home recently succeeded in obtaining a tax free status for donations is a reflection that the home is run genuinely. ( NB : Caring Soul's founders are particularly concerned with dubious charity outfits with ulterior motives to enrich themselves ) Caring Soul had learned tremendously over the 12 years of voluntary and charity work. Helping the less fortunate requires the mental resilience of doing it consistently. It also requires deeper thoughts in how to make cash donations stretch a little more for them. Many charity homes are not very good at managing their their cash flow well, resulting in spending on some unnecessary items, especially so when they are flushed with cash donations during good times. As such, it is wise to pace out the cash donations to them over a period so as to reduce the chances of them spending on items that can be avoided. From past experiences, it is also saddening and sometimes shocking to see huge amount of donated items that have gone way passed their expiry dates. Stacks and stacks of rice were left idle until they were infested with rice weevils. Canned foods were way passed their expiry dates and tonnes of other items went to waste. It was quite a tricky situation at that time - on the one hand good Samaritans heaped the homes with items without consulting them. On the other hand, the homes cannot reject the items for fear that they will lose the good will of the donors. Therefore, it is always prudent to ask what the home needs so that more value can be derived from the initiative. Incidentally, many homes will also have a list of items updated on their whiteboard from time to time. Lately, Caring Soul has also been quite active in promoting and circulating charity messages around which is quite a deviation from one of his Caring Philosophy statement of maintaining a low profile in its charity and voluntary work. This sudden change in stance is because tiring times like this requires more publicity as it is getting more and more difficult for homes to obtain donation. They are truly struggling. A little more publicity will help trigger the kind thoughts of friends who are capable of helping them. Caring Soul will revert to its low profile regime once the charity homes are back on their feet with more donors. Meantime, thanks so much for your time in reading this. Let’s give some thoughts to the less fortunate and bless them with our prayers. Take care and stay safe. View More |
What a way to greet 2022January 17, 2022 :- Just when some semblance of normalcy started to take shape at charitable homes, Mother Nature struck with fury, bringing floods that destroyed thousands of homes towards the last few weeks of 2021. One of them is the Jasheira Old folks home, nestled off a beaten track in Ijok, a small coastal town some 60 km from Kuala Lumpur. Six months ago, more than 50 inmates were infected with Covid 19. The home has to close its doors to visitors and regular donations became scarce. Just when things were about to pick up, the home was struck with massive flood waters towards the last week of December 2021. It was submerged under four feet of water. Beds, mattresses and blankets were washed away while food and groceries were soaked to uselessness. The inmates have to take shelter in nearby evacuation centres while waiting for the flood water to recede. Caring Soul members in collaboration with another charitable outfit used to visit this home with hair cut services and grocery supplies in the past. As we witnessed the plight of this home recently, there was little we could do during the height of the crisis but to leave it to the professionals to handle the rescue work and the immediate welfare of the residents. Now that the dust has settled and the inmates back to the home, Caring Soul visited them today with a carload of used clothings, new toothbrushes, towels and toothpaste from the kind and generous contributions of closed friends. As requested by the home, we also donated on behalf of a friend, a blood pressure monitor and a full set of blood glucose monitor to them. All these were accompanied with some cash donation to help the home get through this difficult period. View More |
